MUCBO at the European Synchrotron in Grenoble: Investigating the Mediterranean’s Past

In June, Rafel Matamales, curator at MUCBO | Museum of Natural Sciences, travelled to the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France, as part of a research project focused on the study of the fauna that once inhabited the Mediterranean region during one of its most extraordinary geological events: the desiccation of the Mediterranean Sea.

Using cutting-edge scientific equipment, fossil samples were scanned with exceptional precision, allowing researchers to observe their internal structures without damaging them and to analyse features of high paleontological interest.

This valuable scientific experience will help deepen our understanding of the geological history of Mallorca and the wider Mediterranean region, while also strengthening MUCBO’s collaboration with leading international research institutions.
