History

The project for creating the institution began to take shape in 1980, when a group of Sollerics decided to launch the initiative to create the first science museum and botanical garden in Mallorca. The Balearic Museum of Natural Sciences Association was established, which began to collect different natural history collections to be housed in the future museum, and also seeds of wild plants and local varieties of vegetables and fruit trees for the creation of the germplasm bank. It was decided that the institution would occupy the property called “Camp d’en Prohom”, at that time owned by “Sa Nostra”. Thecity council acquired most of this property, and constituted the municipal museum, which was inaugurated in 1992 together with the first terraces of the botanical garden. In 1997 the two institutions followed independent paths, the Museum continued to be managed by the MBCN Association, while the Garden was constituted as a foundation with the support of the Government of the Balearic Islands, the Council of Mallorca, the Sóller City Council, the University of the Balearic Islands, the MBCN Association, the Ibero-Macaronesian Association of Botanical Gardens, and “Sa Nostra” Balearic Savings Bank. Finally, in 2020 the museum was incorporated into the foundation, becoming the Sóller Botanical Garden Foundation-Balearic Museum of Natural Sciences, with the commercial name MUCBO (MUseu de Ciències i jardí BOtànic, Museum of Sciences and Botanical Garden in catalan).
