Educational Centers
The MUCBO has an educational program for schools aimed at making known the natural and cultural heritage of the Balearic Islands through the collections of the Botanical Garden and Natural Science Museum. Additionally, we present a series of workshops combined with the same didactic objective by utilizing the collections from both sections.

Mushrooms of Our Forests
Is a mushroom the same as a fungus? Why are fungi considered the “garbage collectors” of forests? Does a pine’s life depend on a fungus? Why do some mushrooms smell like rotten meat? Through the senses and various games, students will learn about the role of fungi in ecosystems and the great diversity of mushrooms in our forests, which will increase their awareness of natural environment conservation and popular culture.

Myotragus
Through a dynamic workshop, students will discover the events that took place in the Balearic Islands during and after the Messinian crisis, around 5.6 million years ago. What were the islands like at that time and what new protagonists arrived? How did Myotragus evolve and why? What were the Gymnesian Islands? Do we still find fauna and flora that existed millions of years ago? Did the landscape change when humans arrived? These and many more questions will be explored in this workshop.

Fossils, Traces of the Past
Is a 100-million-year-old excrement a fossil? What are the oldest rocks in Mallorca? What is an ichnite? Why do fossils speak to us and what do they tell us? With a workshop adapted to different educational levels, students will be introduced to the fascinating world of paleontology and will be paleontologists for a day!

Living Islands, Balearic Biodiversity
A good opportunity to get to know the permanent exhibition of the Natural Science Museum with the guidance of the institution’s educators. A comprehensive visit is made to investigate the biodiversity of the Balearic Islands and various workshops and activities to learn about the biological richness that surrounds us. It is a space to study Balearic biodiversity, reflect on the dangers that threaten it, and raise awareness about the need to conserve it.

The Museum at School: All About Water
Starting from a mural representing a symbolic island surrounded by the sea, a series of simple activities are developed. The water cycle, the animals and plants that live in it, experimentation with fresh and salt water, meteorological phenomena, popular culture, and human use of water are some of the contents that students can explore through the activities in the “All Water” briefcase.
TARGET AUDIENCE:

Observations: The activity must be arranged at least one month in advance. The school will have the material for a maximum of 15 days.

The Museum at School: The Animal Kingdom
Through a dynamic activity where students are the protagonists, we will explore the animal kingdom in depth. Thanks to a suitcase loaded with museum materials that the educator will bring to the school, children will explore topics such as where animals live, how they reproduce, what they eat, and what type of skeleton they have, among others.

Insect Collection
Through a series of games and activities in which students will use their senses, curiosity will be awakened to learn about the world of insects. What is an insect? How does it feed? How does it move? What sounds do they emit? These are some of the questions that will be resolved through this interesting workshop and the didactic notebook that will be delivered to teachers.

Permo-Triassic: When Life Almost Disappeared
In this proposal, framed in the new temporary exhibition, we will learn about the largest extinction in history and the causes that provoked it. We will discover the fauna that inhabited the Balearic Islands at that time, and the oldest fossils that have been found, even prior to the first dinosaurs. We will learn how they were, where they lived, and how the Tramuntanasaurus and other animals with which it coexisted have been discovered.

Botanical Garden Workshops

A Garden of Sensations
Students will awaken their five senses through interaction with the Garden’s flora. The perfume of flowers, the sounds of birds or wind passing through branches, different leaves, the touch of seeds, or the taste of some fruits, allow the development of cognitive, sensory, and recognition capabilities in an interactive way.
WHAT WE OFFER:
Circuit through collections of ornamental plants, medicinal plants, and the vegetable garden, with stops to stimulate the senses through direct interaction with plants and environmental elements.

Discover the World of Plants
Where do lentils come from? What does a plant need to grow? What is the purpose of each part of a plant? We will discover the world of plants with Caléndula and Lentejita, two characters who inhabit the Botanical Garden. Additionally, we will learn about some of the most common plants of the Balearic Islands and recognize plant parts through a game in the center of the Garden.

The Pantry – Preserving Local Varieties
Students will connect with the agricultural culture of the Balearic Islands through an activity in the middle of the Botanical Garden’s vegetable garden, where they can identify plant products sown in each season of the year. We will awaken interest in the origin of things and recognize the relationships between humans and plants, identifying the main crops in our islands, especially local varieties. At the same time, students will be introduced to eating habits and the importance of a varied and healthy diet.

The Usefulness of Plants
Participants will discover the different areas of our life where plants are present and learn about their various uses since the origin of humanity. This activity aims to raise awareness about the importance of plants in our daily life and awaken respect for diversity, recognizing the economic, ornamental, and ecological value of plants.
WHAT WE OFFER:
Gymkhana developed in the collections of the ethnobotanical area of the garden, where we will learn about ornamental and medicinal plants, visit the fruit tree area and the vegetable garden. The day will conclude with a simple experiment.

L’explorador del món vegetal
Els alumnes descobriran com són les plantes mitjançant jocs i exercicis amb les col·leccions de planta viva del Botànic. Interaccionaran amb l’entorn i augmentaran el seu vocabulari científic a la vegada que observaran l’estructura i fisiologia de les plantes, i aprendran a classificar-les segons criteris morfològics. Quina és la funció de les fulles? Per què les flors són de colors? Com es dispersen els fruits? Totes aquestes són preguntes que anirem responent ajustant el contingut al nivell escolar del grup.

The Living Beings of the Garden
What is biodiversity? What organisms are part of the Garden’s ecosystem? What role do they play in the botanical network? What relationships exist between the inhabitants of our collections? What is pollination? Who visits the flowers and why? What imbalances affect nature? We will answer all these questions by investigating the animal world hidden in the Garden and observing the interactions between animals and plants. We will discuss their role in the ecosystem. We will reflect on the conservation of the environment and the role of humans in its destruction.

The ecosystems of the Balearic Islands
Students will discover the main native plants and recognize the importance of Balearic endemisms. Walking through the different areas of the Botanical Garden, they will see the various forms that plants take to adapt to the different environments and ecosystems that can be found in the Balearics. At the same time, habits of respect and care towards living beings and the natural environment in which they live will be awakened.

The evolution of the plant kingdom
Students will learn about the 4 major groups of terrestrial plants (bryophytes, pteridophytes, gymnosperms, and angiosperms) and their characteristics, while identifying and classifying them. We will talk about the evolutionary mechanisms that have occurred until reaching the current plant diversity. An activity to learn about and classify the diversity of plants in our flora!

Itinerary through the Balearic Flora collections of the Botanical Garden guided by an educator. During the itinerary, participants will use magnifying glasses and dichotomous keys.

What is a botanical garden? What is the task of the Sóller Botanical Garden? How can we become botanists? The protagonists of pollination
Through a series of games and activities in which students will use their senses, curiosity will be awakened to learn about the world of insects, while discovering how they feed, move, or communicate. Additionally, through research in the garden, they will observe the types of relationships that exist between different living beings, animals, and plants.

The biodiversity of Camp d’en Prohom
Through research and games, we will learn about the diversity of habitats in the Garden and Museum, what environmental factors condition life, and what organisms, animals, and plants inhabit them. Through this workshop, and using Camp d’en Prohom as an object of study, we will learn about the biological richness that surrounds us, while awakening habits of respect and care towards living beings and the natural environment where we live.

Guided visit to the Museum and garden
This visit involves a global vision of the Balearic Museum of Natural Sciences and the Sóller Botanical Garden. With this visit, students will be able to learn about the museum’s collections and the garden, how they are preserved, and how work is done for the conservation of Balearic biodiversity. We will also learn about the rarest and most threatened plant species of the Balearic Islands, endemisms, and the conservation programs that are carried out. We will answer the questions: How and when were the Islands formed? Why are there no dinosaur remains found in the Balearics? What secrets can you discover by observing simple grains of sand? What organisms can we find within a Posidonia meadow?

Technical visit to the Garden
At the Botanical Institute, the Germplasm Bank and the Herbarium will be visited. The propagation and reserve area of the Botanical Garden will also be visited, and the way of managing and conserving floras will be explained. During the day, the maintenance of living plant collections will be discussed.

Technical visit to the Museum
In this activity aimed at small groups, a complete visit will be made, not only through the museum’s exhibitions but also through the areas where technical and scientific teams work. Visitors will be able to learn about the different Natural History collections kept at the Museum of Natural Sciences and the conservation and consultation areas. A great opportunity to get to know the Museum of Natural Sciences in depth and the important work carried out in it!
