The MUCBO joins the celebrations of International Museum Day.

The MUCBO once again celebrates International Museum Day, which will take place next Monday, 18 May, with a special programme included within this initiative promoted by ICOM and implemented across the network of museums on our island with the support of the Consell de Mallorca.

Within the framework of these celebrations, the MUCBO has scheduled for 14 May a very special lecture entitled “Discovering the biology of Spinosaurus mirabilis, to be delivered by the palaeontologist and science communicator Francesc Gascó.

This year’s theme is “Museums uniting a divided world”, with the aim of highlighting the role of museums as spaces capable of connecting diverse realities and overcoming cultural, social and geopolitical divisions, fostering dialogue, understanding, inclusion and peaceful coexistence both within communities and among peoples worldwide. In addition, the year 2026 also includes the celebrations of the 80th anniversary of ICOM, a commemoration that highlights eight decades of commitment to supporting museums and their transformative role in society.

The objective of International Museum Day is to raise awareness of the fact that «museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples». Organised on 18 May each year or around this date, the events and activities planned to celebrate International Museum Day can last a day, a weekend or an entire week. IMD was celebrated for the first time 40 years ago. All around the world, more and more museums participate in International Museum Day. Last year, more than 37,000 museums took part in the event in around 158 countries and territories.
