Pieces and plants of the month

Vanessa cardui

1 July 2026

(Linnaeus, 1758)

The painted lady (Vanessa cardui) is a diurnal butterfly with black and orange wings marked with white spots, and a wingspan that can reach up to 63 mm. It is a migratory species that travels annually from North Africa to northern Europe, passing through the Balearic Islands during May and June. Several generations follow one another throughout this migration.

This year, the species has been observed in exceptionally high numbers in the Balearic Islands, far more abundantly than in previous years. This is because migration events do not occur with the same intensity every year, and this phenomenon may be linked to global climatic events such as El Niño.

Origin: Mallorca.

Age: Present day.
