Caves: unique environments

24 September 2025

The MUCBO | Museum of Natural Sciences has created an exhibition about life in caves, unique environments with fauna that have very particular characteristics. Visitors can see a life-size recreation of a cave, installed on the second floor of the Museum, in the Biodiversity gallery. Inside this cave, there are life-size reproductions of bats, as well as enlarged-scale sculptures of small invertebrates adapted to living in these highly specialized environments. These are accompanied by panels explaining the main characteristics of these animals.

In addition, a temporary travelling exhibition has been produced, consisting of six panels on different aspects of caves, which has toured the MUCBO and the Institut d’Estudis Menorquins.

This project has been funded by the Ministry of Innovation and Science of the Government of Spain and the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology, within the framework of the 2023 grants for the promotion of scientific, technological and innovation culture, as well as by the Regional Ministry of European Funds, University and Culture of the Government of the Balearic Islands, within the framework of the grants for the organization of scientific outreach or dissemination activities, congresses and scientific seminars in the Balearic Islands.
