Mourning the death of Anthony Bonner

MUCBO joins in mourning the death of Anthony Bonner, musician, naturalist, author of Plantes de les Balears, and first Sponsoring Member of the Fundació Jardí Botànic de Sóller.

A Mallorcan of New York origin, Bonner was a man of great intellectual curiosity who readily shared his knowledge with those around him or with anyone who visited him at his home in Puigpunyent. As a renowned Lullist and translator, Bonner expanded the body of knowledge on the medieval thinker through several distinguished publications, and helped bring the figure of Ramon Llull closer to the English-speaking world through his translations.

In the naturalist community of our island, Anthony Bonner is remembered as a founding member and driving force of the GOB, but especially for his ability to make botanical knowledge accessible to enthusiasts and the general public.

At the Botanical Garden, Bonner received recognition for his work in 2009, during an event in which a small booklet on his trajectory was presented, accompanied by heartfelt words from his friends. He also supported the creation of the group of Membres Patrocinadors i Col·laboradors del Jardí Botànic de Sóller, as a meeting point for people who wish to enjoy our flora and contribute to its conservation. His field guide Plantes de les Balears has awakened in more than one generation a sensitivity to plants and a love of nature. Bonner himself expressed this wish:
If this little book can encourage an interest in Balearic botany, I will be more than happy. But if, in the sense that to know better is to love more, and to love is to want to preserve, this little book could do something, however small, to help stop the massive destruction of the Balearic landscape that we have all witnessed over the past fifteen years, then I would consider myself completely satisfied.

It is through his own words that we understand his legacy as a botanist and as a person deeply committed to the culture and nature of this land. From this institution, we wish once again to express our gratitude for his outstanding work throughout all these years and to extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.
