As part of International Museum Day 2026, paleontologist and science communicator Francesc Gascó-Lluna (El Pakozoico) presents this lecture on the latest discoveries published following the excavations carried out in Niger in the autumn of 2022, together with a team of paleontologists led by the University of Chicago, which included the participation of eight Spanish paleontologists. That fieldwork has recently led to the description of a new species for science: Spinosaurus mirabilis.
In this talk we will follow the steps of the expedition, from daily life and work under the harsh conditions of the desert to the study of the fossils in the laboratory and the reconstruction of the biology of this animal. A journey through the research process behind the discovery, study and description of a new fossil species, accompanied by field anecdotes, geological context, and the challenges and particularities of working in one of the world’s great deserts.
