Forma parte de la biolog\u00eda subterr\u00e1nea, que investiga la vida en todo tipo de h\u00e1bitats subterr\u00e1neos, tanto terrestres como acu\u00e1ticos. Es tambi\u00e9n una disciplina hist\u00f3ricamente vinculada a la isla de Mallorca, donde se realizaron algunos de los primeros descubrimientos del mundo que inspiraron teor\u00edas pioneras sobre el origen y la evoluci\u00f3n de los organismos que habitan un ecosistema caracterizado por la absoluta ausencia de luz y la escasez de recursos.<\/p><p><em>Actividad financiada por Fundaci\u00f3n Espa\u00f1ola para la Ciencia y Tecnolog\u00eda, F.S.P.
