On Saturday, April 5th, the Ornithology Series began with the workshop \u201cWhat Are Birds Talking About?\u201d, led by biologist Cristina Fiol.<\/p>
Participants learned about the wide variety of sounds birds can produce\u2014not only through the syrinx (their vocal organ) but also by vibrating their feathers, clacking their beaks, or making clapping sounds with their wings.<\/p>
With many examples, attendees discovered the different songs and calls (such as contact calls and alarm signals) used by various bird species, emphasizing that a single bird can produce multiple vocalizations. The ornithologist explained that the main function of these sounds is communication between birds, often enhanced by feather movements and coloration.<\/p>
The workshop concluded with an outdoor session in the Garden, where participants listened to and distinguished between the songs of birds found in the trees across the terraced areas.<\/p>
