It is glossy dark brown to blackish in color, can reach <strong>24 to 45 mm<\/strong> in length, and has a horn that males use to fight one another. Females have this horn greatly reduced, sometimes appearing only as a small tubercle. They feed on dead wood (they never attack living trees), compost, and other decaying plant matter. The larvae develop during autumn, winter, and spring, and the adults emerge in summer to reproduce.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the Balearic Islands, specimens of this species are commonly seen, especially during June and July. They are generally nocturnal and are attracted to artificial light. An endemic subspecies from Mallorca and Menorca, <strong><em>Oryctes nasicornis ameliae<\/em><\/strong> L\u00f3pez-Col\u00f3n &amp; Bahillo de la Puebla, 2020, has been described, although its validity is not entirely clear.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Origin:<\/strong> Mallorca.<br><strong>Age:<\/strong> Contemporary.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The rhinoceros beetle (Oryctes nasicornis) is one of the largest beetles in the Balearic Islands.
